Since the 17th century, when the southern tip of New Jersey was home to a thriving whaling community, Cape May’s identity, culture and its economy has always been linked to the bounty of the sea. Yet, for most visitors, Cape May means only sun, surf and clean, safe beaches, while others come for its classic Victorian architecture, unique shopping, fine dining or a romantic walk on a beach at sunset. Locals find it ironic that as most of these visitors drive into Cape May they completely miss the very essence of Cape May, its harbor.

Harbor Fest seeks to change that. On Saturday, June 21, 2008, the City of Cape May will host Harbor Fest, 2008. Quite simply, Harbor Fest will be a celebration of seafood and song; the sea, its culture, its economy and its challenges.

Although Cape May’s beautiful and convenient harbor will provide the overall setting for Harbor Fest, most land based activities will be held at or near the Nature Center of Cape May. The Nature Center, with its distinctive blue roofed observation tower is readily identifiable from anywhere in the harbor.

A section of Delaware Avenue that runs in front of the Center will be closed for the event, and will feature vendors serving fresh seafood, nautical gifts, educational displays, a beer garden and live music. Meanwhile, other venues around the harbor will be linked by both a ground based trolley and water taxi.
