Have you heard that we humans use only seven percent of our brains? Sounds a little strange, doesn’t it?

Have you heard that we humans use only seven percent of our brains? Sounds a little strange, doesn’t it? A hypnotist will tell you that the other ninety-three percent of our brain is working, too, but maybe not getting the credit it deserves. It takes both of these parts to make us tick.

That seven percent would be our conscious mind – the part that analyzes and rationalizes, brilliantly solves complex problems, and is the seat of our will power. The conscious mind seeks to understand by reasoning, always following a logical sequence, and is able to keep track of just a few bits of information at a time.

The Subconscious stores everything else. Like an infinitely vast computer, it stores a lifetime full of memories. These past experiences of everything we saw, felt, heard, touched, tasted, and smelled created biochemical reactions in our brain. The amount of raw information is absolutely staggering, isn’t it? No wonder we need to sleep for a third of our lives! Beyond storage, the subconscious mind has the job of assembling this information into something useful, and it does this by associating strings of information together, enabling us to feel emotions, perceive and imagine, to have intuition, and experience impulses. This is where habits are formed, good and bad. Habits are like highways of the mind, created by the steady traffic of these repetitive actions. Of course, some habits are beneficial, and some are not. Sometimes our subconscious turns these neuronhighways into impulses that can harm us, such as smoking on the way to work, over-eating , anger flare ups, unreasonable fears, self doubt, impulse spending, avoidance of the dentist, nail biting, procrastinating and other negative behaviors.

Unlike the rational and logical conscious mind, the subconscious is very literal. It simply knows what it knows, even if what it knows is not really correct. This is the part of a person that a hypnotist works with. We relax a person physically and mentally, to a point where we can address the subconscious directly. We create beneficial suggestions for our client, and then feed those suggestions directly into the subconscious, which is easily accepting of these positive changes. We can make new healthy pathways to replace bad habits, or reinforce the self confidence, focus, and motivation needed to be a better public speaker, golfer, skater, salesperson, manager, or pianist.

Some people think hypnosis is mind control. That is false. While under hypnosis, you remain in control at all times, because anything that was against your personal values or beliefs would distract your attention, and cause you to emerge from hypnosis. You are also able to remember everything that was said while in hypnosis.

Some people think that hypnosis works, but not on them. The truth is that anyone of average or better intelligence has the capability to be hypnotized, as long as they do not fear hypnosis. It is part of being human, like daydreaming. Sometimes a person does not realize when they are in hypnosis. It is not a specific feeling, like warm or cold, that you can point to and say “ok, now I am in hypnosis”. You will feel a deep sense of calm relaxation, like a massage for your mind. It is quite rejuvenating, and enjoyable. Thirty minutes of hypnosis is like a two hour nap. Another important truth about hypnosis is that for it to work, you must really want the change. Willingness is a prerequisite for positive change. Don’t send in your spouse to quit
smoking if they don’t want to quit.
